Travelport has signed a new airline IT services agreement with Germanwings, the growing low-cost carrier owned by Deutsche Lufthansa AG and based in Cologne, Germany.

Germanwings has implemented the Travelport ETDBase, a leading e-ticket database hosting service in use by airlines globally to store and manage electronic ticket data for online and interline e-ticketing.

For the first time, the Travelport ETDBase gives Germanwings the ability to accept electronic tickets plated by Lufthansa Airlines and its accredited travel agencies for travel on Germanwings-operated flights.

In less than one and a half years since embarking on a new and green initiative to convert used cooking oil to biodiesel, Suntec Singapore has recycled more than 15,200 litres of cooking oil, which if not properly disposed of, could contaminate up to 304 million litres of water. This is an impressive increase of 90% since June 2009.

As part of Suntec Singapore’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, its kitchen hands pitched in their part for the environment when it reduced its net carbon footprint by 13,879.07 kg of carbon dioxide last year.

Suntec Singapore partners with Alpha Biofuels to work out a solution to give urban waste a second lease of life as a sustainable form of energy. The partnership enables Alpha Biofuels to tap on one of the largest commercial kitchens in Singapore to collect used cooking oil weekly and transform it into top quality biodiesel that can be used to power a multitude of machinery, including cars.

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that is non-toxic and, when burned, produces no sulphur emissions, less carbon monoxide and fewer particulates and hydrocarbons compared to traditional petroleum diesel. The conversion of used cooking oil into biodiesel is a cleaner burning alternative to fossil-based diesel and is becoming more and more popular as a greener renewable alternative fuel.

Biodiesel can be used (but not limited to) the following ways:

- To fuel diesel vehicles,
- To fuel construction equipment,
- To generate heat for the home,
- As a lubrication additive,
- As asphalt and paint removal,
- For electricity generation,
- As a solvent to clean parts and tools,
- To heat a motor-pool building

Shangri-La Opens Third Hotel in Inner Mongolia

Shangri-La has expanded its growing portfolio of hotels in the region with the opening of the Shangri-La Hotel, Manzhouli.

The city in northeast China shares a 54-kilometre border with Russia and is China’s busiest land port entry. Shangri-La Hotel, Manzhouli is the group’s third hotel in Inner Mongolia following its sister properties in Huhhot and Baotou.

Shangri-La Hotel, Manzhouli is a short stroll from the main shopping and entertainment district, 20 minutes from the airport and within a five-minute drive of the railway station.

Walking into the 18-floor hotel, guests are greeted by a ceiling dome reminiscent of a Mongolian yurt, with a feature chandelier over the main lobby. The colour palette throughout the hotel is predominantly purple to exude a warm and inviting atmosphere. The hotel also celebrates the city’s unique mix of cultures by showcasing many of its tapestries and furnishings of various influences, such as Mongolian pattern carpets, Chinese bed runners and Russian motif lamps.

Designed by Eva Wan Studio, the 235-room hotel including 24 suites takes on a contemporary designed scheme, accented by Chinese and Mongolian soft furnishings.

Guestrooms range in size from 38 to 198 square metres, with floors 15 to 17 devoted to Horizon Club accommodation. The rooms have sweeping views of Xiaobei Lake, the city or the expansive grasslands with jagged mountain background beyond. The 1,000-square-metre Horizon Club Lounge on the 18th floor offers an exclusive retreat and a host of privileges and amenities to discerning guests.

The hotel has three restaurants and a lounge. Located on the second floor, Shang Palace - Shangri-La’s signature Chinese restaurant - serves Cantonese and Northern Chinese cuisine. The restaurant seats up to 216 guests, including 59 diners in the dining hall and eight to 20 guests at each of the 12 private dining rooms. Each private dining room features a yurt-inspired dome ceiling and traditional Chinese and Mongolian style interior design.

Café 99 is an all-day dining venue with a seating capacity of 146 diners. The restaurant presents an international à la carte selection and an open-theatre kitchen where guests can watch the chefs in action.

The Lobby Lounge, which seats up to 80 guests, is designed with floor-to-ceiling French windows offering panoramic views of Xiaobei Lake. Guests can enjoy daily piano performances at teatime, along with an extensive selection of drinks and snacks.

Opening in June 2011, the hotel’s speciality restaurant, Salt and Bread, will offer traditional Russian cuisine in a casual environment and will accommodate up to 258 diners. The restaurant will serve all-time favourites such as Chicken Kiev, Beef Stroganoff and Shashlik. Performances by Russian musicians will be staged nightly.

The health club spreads across 1,286 square metres on the third floor, with a 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool with views of the lake and mountains through the windows. The health club includes steam bath, sauna, a hair salon and massage facilities, which are also open to the public at additional charges.

Shangri-La Hotel, Manzhouli has more than 4,000 square metres of MICE space. The Grand Ballroom is pillar-free with a ceiling height of 7.5 metres and can accommodate more than 1,500 guests’ theatre-style and 1,200 guests for banquets. With direct lift access from the car park, the ballroom can be easily transformed into a car showroom.

In addition, the hotel provides one VIP reception room and four multi-purpose function rooms, most with natural daylight and ranging in size from 105 to 173 square metres.

Other facilities include a 24-hour business centre and a shopping arcade connecting to the hotel.

Reem Investments has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Nobu Hospitality to operate and manage the planned Nobu Hotel at Najmat, Reem Island, Abu Dhabi.

The development will occupy a prime position on Najmat Marina and Canal, delivering panoramic views of the Abu Dhabi skyline.

Guests will have exclusive access to a variety of destination dining and entertainment facilities in addition to a Nobu Restaurant, as well as a private beach.

Australians Dominate Phuket Cricket Sixes

Finals Day of the 2011 Phuket International Cricket Sixes took place on Sunday in glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures, interrupted only briefly by a tropical downpour at Karon Stadium in Phuket, Thailand.

The finale of the Spoon Division brought together two Australian teams, the Cockatoos from Adelaide and, making their debut at the Sixes, the Gold Coast Falcons from Queensland. The Cockatoos featured former Australian national team captain Karen Rolton, and she took to the wayward Falcons bowling immediately in a brief and breezy innings of 20 not out off just 4 balls before retiring. Eddy was also in bludgeoning mood as he also retired having made 21, the Cockatoos posting 75 without loss. The Falcons were pegged back by accurate ‘Toos bowling, particularly by Treens, Karen Rolton and Rah Rah, and although Zaac retired on 20 not out the Falcons ended their run chase with 45, giving the Adelaide outfit the win and the silverware.

The Bowl Final saw two teams making their debut at the Phuket Sixes battling for honours, Southern Stars from Australia and MG7 of Kuwait. It was a one sided affair with the Stars putting on a challenging total of 72/1, Downie retiring on 34 not out. MG7 collapsed in the run chase due to some miserly bowling including an over of 1/1 by Brett. They struggled to 31/2 at the close making the Southern Stars the Bowl champions in their first tournament.

Plate final action was another all Australian clash featuring St. George’s River from Sydney versus Phuket regulars the Leeming Spartans of Perth. Batting first St George’s put on 67 /1 following some tight bowling and fielding by the Spartans. Ben Stares led the charge for the Sydney-siders smashing 28 not out. In reply Spartan batsman Hersey and Dollywood batted aggressively making 30 not out and 28 not out respectively to take the Perth outfit past their total with just one ball to spare to become Plate Champions.

The Cup final was a competitive, tightly fought affair between former champions, the Corner Tigers from Pakistan, and making their debut in the Cup final, St. Francis Camels from Australia. The Camels put on 56/3 off their allotted overs, Matty again batting with gusto making 33 not out. The Tigers would have been reasonably satisfied with the target, but some razor sharp bowling by the Camels regularly pegged back the Tiger batsmen. But the Tigers got within touching distance of the target, needing 4 to win off the last ball having lost 3 wickets. Nicko bowled the final ball straight down the corridor for no run delighting the excited Camels as they earned their first title as Champions of the Phuket International Cricket Sixes.

Following the completion of play, teams were treated to a Gala Awards Dinner held in the ballroom at the Kata Beach Resort where the silverware was distributed.

Cathay Pacific Updates Japan Flight Schedules

Cathay Pacific has unveiled its latest flight schedules to and from Japan for the period 16 April to 31 May 2011.

Tokyo

• CX524 HK-Narita (daily) will stay cancelled until 31 May except 28/29 April and 5/8 May
• CX501 Narita-HK (daily) will be cancelled except 28/29 April and 5 May and will resume from 7 May
• CX509 Narita-HK (daily) will be cancelled from 9 May to 31 May

With the new schedule, Cathay Pacific will operate six daily flights from Hong Kong to Tokyo between mid-April and the end of May.

Osaka

• CX566 HK-Osaka (daily) will be cancelled from 16 April to 31 May (except 28/29 April and 3-8 May)
• CX567 Osaka-HK (daily) will stay cancelled from 16 April to 31 May (except 28/29 April and 3-8 May)

This means the airline will operate three daily flights to and from Osaka in May.

Nagoya

• CX536 HK-Nagoya (three flights weekly) will stay cancelled until 31 May (except 28 April)
• CX535 Nagoya-HK (three flights weekly) will stay cancelled until 31 May (except 28 April)

With the latest adjustment, Cathay will continue to operate two daily flights to and from Nagoya in May.

Sapporo

Meanwhile, the airline has said that its flight crews will resume staying overnight in Tokyo (except for CX520 which will be a turnaround flight) following confirmation from six United Nations agencies that there are no health or safety hazards associated with transportation. Almost all the major carriers have now returned to crew layovers in Tokyo.

“To prepare for the resumption of layovers, our operations departments have ensured that crew hotels in Tokyo are well prepared and that such things as water and food supplies are safe and plentiful for crew,” said a Cathay Pacific spokesperson. “As always, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, and we continue to monitor the situation in Japan closely and take advice from the relevant authorities.”

Qatar Airways to Launch Dedicated Cargo Services on Three Routes

Qatar Airways Cargo is to launch dedicated freighter services to Hanoi, Kozhikode and Bengaluru.

Freighter operations to Kozhikode and onto Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore, will be served with an Airbus A300 freighter on the route boosting Qatar Airways Cargo freighter capacity in India by an additional 40 metric tonnes a week.

Cargo flights from Doha to Hanoi begin on 15 April 2011, stopping in Hong Kong on the return sector. The weekly service is operated with one of the airline’s dedicated Boeing 777 freighters and follows the successful launch of passenger flights to the Vietnamese capital in November 2010. Qatar Airways also operates scheduled services to Ho Chi Minh city.

In India, Qatar Airways currently operates passenger and cargo flights to 12 cities. The additional freighter service to Kozhikode and Bengaluru will complement existing cargo operations to Kolkata, the West Bengali city that will also become a passenger route when Qatar Airways commences daily flights on 27 July 2011. Cargo payloads include a multitude of goods ranging from medical and pharmaceutical supplies to vegetables and personal effects.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said that the new freighter services presented an opportunity to grow business in Vietnam and also bring welcomed extra capacity to the airline’s cargo operations in India.

“Adding Hanoi to our cargo network is an astute move for us as we’ve identified this as a major growth market,” he said. “Vietnam exports a lot of manufacturing goods and it is the world’s second highest exporter of rice ... In India, we’ve seen a big upward trend in cargo movements. By coupling Kozhikode with Bengaluru on this new cargo route from Doha, we ensure that we are utilising the available space onboard our freighter to the maximum.”

Last year, Qatar Airways launched its first North American cargo route with dedicated freighter operations to Chicago – and received two of its three Boeing 777 freighters on order. Cargo operations for the airline will move to New Doha International Airport when the US$14.5 billion facility becomes operational. With Bengaluru, Kozhikode and Hanoi added, the number of freighter destinations served increases to 29 destinations.

By 2013, Qatar Airways plans to serve over 120 key business and leisure destinations worldwide with a modern fleet of more than 120 aircraft. Today, the airline’s fleet stands at 97 aircraft, flying to 100 destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North and South America.

Singapore Airlines Cargo Adds Kolkata and Penang to Network

Singapore Airlines Cargo has added two destinations to its network.

On 30 March, the airline resumed Boeing 747-400 freighter operations to Kolkata in India after a two-year hiatus, while on 8 April it started serving a new destination, Penang in Malaysia.

The new freighter capacity will complement the ‘bellyhold’ space available from Singapore Airlines’ daily passenger services between Singapore and Kolkata.

United Continental Holdings and ANA have launched their trans-Pacific joint venture, through which United Airlines and Continental Airlines may coordinate sales and marketing with ANA and improve benefits offered to each airline’s frequent flyers.

Through the joint venture, enabled by the U.S.-Japan Open Skies agreement and antitrust immunity granted by U.S. and Japanese regulators, the airlines can now align schedules, fares, and terms and conditions.

“By forging this closer cooperation with our partner airlines in the Star Alliance, we will significantly enhance our ability to serve trans- Pacific customers and offer new choice and convenience for passengers,” said Shinichiro Ito, president and CEO of ANA.

The additional fare and schedule options will offer customers more choices and seamless booking on itineraries that combine U.S. flight segments on United or Continental; trans-Pacific segments on ANA, United or Continental flights; and flights within Japan on ANA.

Singapore Airlines has launched flights from Singapore Changi Airport to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport via Barcelona.

Sao Paulo is Singapore Airlines’ first destination in South America, which has become the sixth continent in its route network.

The new three-times-weekly service also strengthens Singapore Changi Airport’s status as a global hub.

“We are pleased to add Sao Paulo to our growing network of destinations. With such high profile events as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games lined up in Brazil, we are confident that travel demand to Brazil will be strong. Bangkok Airways Cancels All Flights to Samui

Bangkok Airways cancelled all its flights in and out of Samui between 11:00 and 22:00 on Monday due to severe thunder storms hitting the island.

The airline, that likes to call itself Asia's Boutique Airline, has also postponed all flights in and out of Samui from 06.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. today (Tuesday). The airline said it expected to resume services after 12.00 p.m. but this is entirely subject to weather conditions.

The 36 flights that were cancelled on Monday include:

Singapore Airlines to Increase Fuel Surcharge

Singapore Airlines is to increase its fuel surcharge for tickets issued on or after 17 March 2011, as a result of the continued escalation in the price of jet fuel.

The price of jet fuel is now above US$130 per barrel, which is the highest in two years.

The new fuel surcharge levels apply to all Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights and represent an increase of between US$2 and US$26 per sector, depending on the distance and class of travel.

Qatar Airways to Launch Flights to Montreal

Qatar Airways is to make its Canada debut with the launch of scheduled flights to Montreal, effective 29 June 2011.

Canada’s second largest city will be served with three-flights-a-week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays using the airline’s flagship Boeing 777-200 Long Range aircraft.

The non-stop journey from the airline’s hub in Doha to Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport will have a total flying time of 13 hrs 20 minutes.

The destination marks Qatar Airways’ first foray into Canada following a series of bilateral negotiations in Doha last year, when the airline secured rights to fly passenger and cargo flights to the country.

The province of Quebec’s capital city becomes the airline’s fourth destination in North America. The airline currently operates daily flights to New York, Washington and Houston.

“It truly is a milestone to bring Canada and, in particular, Montreal, into the Qatar Airways’ family of international routes. The introduction of our Montreal service will provide a strong transportation link between Canada and Qatar and further facilitate the already strong economic ties between our countries,” said Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer, Akbar Al Baker. “According to the government agency Export Development Canada, there are more than 1,500 Canadian companies doing business in the Gulf and Qatar, in particular, is one of Canada’s largest trading partners in the Middle East ... With the oil and gas industry being a key connection that naturally aligns us, we hope that as soon as our thrice-weekly service is well-established and boosts the Qatari and Canadian economy to receive additional traffic rights for a daily operation to Montreal.”

Canadian nationals arriving in Qatar can enter the country without prior visa arrangements. Such passengers, with Qatar as their end destination, can enter by obtaining a visa on arrival, a service extended to 33 countries, with Canada being one of them.

The Boeing 777 on the Montreal route has a two-class operation, offering 42 seats in Business in a 2–2–2 cabin layout, with a seat pitch of 78 inches.

Air Astana Wins Injunction Against Amadeus in Spanish Civil Court

On 6 January 2011, Amadeus served Air Astana a notice for termination of distribution services effective 21 January 2011, based on an alleged breach of contract.

Air Astana immediately contested the alleged breach, asking Amadeus to withdraw the termination notice.

Consequently, Air Astana started a legal process against Amadeus by filing for an injunction against Amadeus’ actions in the Spanish Civil Court.

Then, on Thursday, 3 February 2011, the Spanish did not uphold Amadeus’ action, and granted an injunction in favour of Air Astana.

The court has required Amadeus to reinstate its services with immediate effect. As a result of Air Astana’s successful court action, it will once again be possible for Air Astana flights to be booked and ticketed worldwide through Amadeus.

In a statement issued by the airline, Air Astana said it "would like to apologise to its agents and customers for the inconvenience faced during the period that Amadeus terminated its services based on an alleged breach."

Qatar Airways has launched scheduled flights between Doha and Brussels in Belgium.

The addition of Brussels strengthens Qatar Airways’ European presence to 24 destinations, representing 25% of the carrier’s global network that also spans the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and North and South America.

Brussels becomes the third new European destination launched by the airline this month following on the heels of the Hungarian capital, Budapest, and Romania’s capital city, Bucharest. Lufthansa to Launch A380 Flights to San Francisco

From 10 May 2011, Lufthansa will operate a daily A380 service to San Francisco under the present flight numbers LH 454 and LH 455, replacing the Boeing 747-400 service currently offered on this route.

The new Lufthansa flagship is configured with 526 seats - eight in First Class, 98 in Business Class and 420 in Economy Class.

Ticket prices for an A380 flight do not differ from regular fares on this route. Return fares to San Francisco on the A380 start at 679 euros, all inclusive.

Passengers can already fly on the A380, the most advanced aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet, to Johannesburg, Beijing and Tokyo. From the end of February, the Lufthansa flagship will also operate to New York. By the time the airline's seventh A380 enters service, the A380 fleet will be taking off on 70 long-haul flights per week, covering a distance of more than half a million kilometres. Each week from then on, almost 37,000 passengers will have an opportunity to fly on an A380. Lufthansa expects to take delivery of the eighth aircraft of this type in the first half of 2011.

Finnair has embarked on a new interline agreement with Australian airline, Jetstar, expanding its network connections in the Asia Pacific area.

The cooperation allows customers to purchase a Jetstar, Jetstar Asia, Valuair or Jetstar Pacific flight as part of a single integrated transaction and travel itinerary through Finnar’s distribution network and sold on a Finnair E-ticket.

Finnair customers can connect onto Jetstar’s network in Osaka, Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong and in May 2011 also Singapore, when Finnair commences its daily operations with the Airbus 330 aircraft.

China Airlines to Launch Taoyuan - Wuhan Flights in January

China Airlines (CAL) is to launch direct scheduled flights linking Taoyuan and Wuhan on 26 January 2011.

Wuhan will become the 17th mainland Chinese destination served by CAL since the opening of flights across the Taiwan Strait.

CAL will operate the Taoyuan-Wuhan service twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays using Airbus 330-300 aircraft equipped with 36 seats in Business Class and 277 in Economy Class.

To celebrate the Wuhan route’s inauguration and CAL’s 51st anniversary, CAL is offering special discounts for passengers purchasing Taoyuan-Wuhan tickets before the end of February 2011, with the NT$12,100 Economy Class fare reduced to just NT$10,600.

CAL is also working with travel agencies to provide special tour packages exploring the Wuhan region, including an eight-day Three Gorges of the Yangtze River package and a special tour of ancient civilizations in the Hunan, Hubei and Zhangjiajie area.

Singapore Visitor Arrivals in October 2010

Singapore visitor arrivals registered 15.8 percent growth to reach 978,000 in October 2010, the highest number of arrivals recorded for the month of October. [See: Singapore Visitor Arrivals for October 2009]

This also marks the eleventh consecutive month of record visitor arrivals. Visitor days were estimated at 3.7 million days, a year-on-year growth of 13.2 percent.

Indonesia (179,000), P.R. China (93,000), Malaysia (83,000), Australia (77,000) and India (76,000) were Singapore's top five visitor generating markets in October 2010. These markets accounted for 52 percent of total visitor arrivals for the month.

In October 2010, South Korea (+80.4 percent), Thailand (+60.8 percent), and Philippines (+35.5 percent) registered their highest growth out of the top 15 markets.

Tourism receipts (TR) for January – September 2010 was estimated to reach SGD 13.7 billion, which for the first time includes the contribution of the Integrated Resorts in Shopping, Accommodation, F&B, as well as Sightseeing and Entertainment. Higher per capita spending, strong visitor arrivals, as well as spending at the IRs contributed to the 47 percent year-on-year growth.

The Singapore Tourism Board said it is optimistic that the full-year TR for 2010 will fall within the forecast range of SGD 17.5 to SGD 18.5 billion.

Excluding spend in Sightseeing and Entertainment, Indonesia (SGD 2,072 million), P.R. China (SGD 1,240 million), India (SGD 753 million), Australia (SGD 752 million) and Malaysia (SGD 562 million) were Singapore’s top five TR generating markets for Q1-Q3 2010.

Indonesia (+32 percent), India (+30 percent), and P.R. China (+28 percent) posted higher than average TR growth rates, due mainly to higher shopping spend and for Indonesia, healthcare-related expenditure.

Despite a 1 percent decline in arrivals from UK during Jan-Sep 2010 vs. year ago, higher per capita spending by UK visitors resulted in a 19 percent growth in TR.

AOR recorded a 4.3 percentage point increase over October 2009 to reach 86 percent in October 2010 while ARR increased by 16.2 percent to reach an estimate of SGD 214. RevAPR increased by 22.3 percent to reach SGD 185 in October 2010.

Garuda Indonesia Wraps Up Financial Restructuring

Garuda Indonesia has wrapped up its financial restructuring with creditors, where the last group which are the ECA (European Export Credit Agency) and the Commercial Lenders was signed for the remainder debt of US$ 277 million.

The signing was done by EVP Finance Garuda Indonesia, Elisa Lumbantoruan and David Brackenridge from Lloyds TSB on behalf of the Lenders, witnessed by the President and CEO of Garuda Indonesia, Emirsyah Satar and the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia for UK, HE Yuri Thamrin.

Since 2005, Garuda's total debt has decreased significantly from US$ 868 million to US$ 464 million on November 2010, due to a combination of payment, debt buy back and equity conversion.

The last part of US$ 464 million, was signed on Friday in an amount of US$ 277 million and restructured until 2016. The debt was used to fund the 6 a/c Airbus A330-300 in 1996.

President and CEO Garuda Indonesia, Emirsyah Satar says that the wrap up of the financial restructuring is an important milestone for Garuda, which will speed up the development of Garuda, especially with the plan for IPO in the near future.

AirAsia will hold 40% equity in AirAsia Inc. through AirAsia International Limited, while the remaining 60% will be held in equal partnership by Antonio O. Cojuangco Jr., Michael R Romero and Marianne B. Hontiveros.

The establishment of AirAsia Philippines will benefit various industries such as travel and tourism, hospitality, entertainment and retail. It will also help the Philippines achieve its Millennium Development goals by 2015.”

As part of the Joint-Venture agreement, AirAsia will provide technical, operational and commercial support on an arms length basis to AirAsia Inc to ensure commercial, operational, branding and service level uniformity throughout AirAsia’s operations.

The Joint Venture is expected to commence operations in the 3rd quarter of 2011 subject to obtaining the relevant approvals.

AirAsia has 140 routes in destinations across ASEAN, Hong Kong, Macau, China, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Australia. Through its low-cost long-haul affiliate AirAsia X, its guests are able to fly to even more destinations in Australia, India and China, and to Taiwan, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Iran, the UK and France.

AirAsia Berhad started flights to the Philippines in April 2005. It currently operates two daily return flights that connect Clark to Kuala Lumpur and to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

Tickets for what is widely regarded as the greatest Rugby Sevens party on earth, the Cathay Pacific / Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens, will go on public sale on Saturday, 22 January 2011.

The price of a three-day adult event ticket in 2011 will be HK$1,250, with children’s tickets priced at HK$300 for youth aged 12 and under.

After an initial pre-sale period to local Rugby Clubs, Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) Stakeholders and official Overseas Ticketing Agents, the HKRFU will stage the public ticket sale.

Etihad Airways Launches Flights to Seoul, South Korea

Etihad Airways has launched flights between Abu Dhabi and Seoul’s Incheon Airport in South Korea.

Seoul is Etihad’s 65th destination on the network in just seven years of operations. The inaugural flight, EY876, will depart Abu Dhabi at 10:45pm, arriving at Seoul’s Incheon Airport at 12:05pm on 11 December (local times).

Etihad will operate a daily A330-200 three-class service, offering 2,800 seats each week on the route.

The new services will operate under an Etihad Airways (EY) and Asiana (OZ) flight code, following the codeshare agreement signed between the two airlines in October.

To mark the launch, Etihad Airways has unveiled special fare deals to Seoul, including ‘two for one’ Coral Economy class fares and discounted fares in Pearl Business class.

Until December 31, customers who purchase a ticket in Coral Economy class from Abu Dhabi to Seoul will be offered one free Coral Economy ticket to Seoul valid for outbound travel up to 31 December 2010.

Discounted fares for travel from Abu Dhabi to Seoul in Pearl Business class start from AED 13,330. The sales period runs until 15 December 2010, with the outbound travel period valid up to 10 February 2011.

Members of the airline’s Etihad Guest loyalty program can also earn double Etihad Guest miles when travelling to Seoul, valid until 10 January 2011. Terms and conditions apply.

Etihad Airways has opened the doors of its latest premium lounge in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1.

Etihad Pearl Business class guests were among the first to enjoy the Etihad premium lounge, following an opening ceremony hosted by Manchester City Football Club (MCFC) manager, Roberto Mancini; Garry Cook, MCFC Chief Executive; and Mike Summerbee, MCFC ambassador.

Etihad’s premium lounge in Manchester is the latest in a progressive roll-out of the lounge concept successfully introduced at the airline’s home base in Abu Dhabi.

Garuda Indonesia to Join SkyTeam

Garuda Indonesia has signed an agreement to join the SkyTeam airline alliance in 2012.

Garuda will expand SkyTeam’s presence in Southeast Asia, adding 30 new destinations to the alliance network. Some of the 30 new destinations in the SkyTeam network are Surabaya in East Java, Medan in North Sumatra and Perth in Australia.

How Technology is Shaping Airports

Investment in IT infrastructure by airports during the downturn has continued as airports prepare for rising passenger numbers, according to the results of a new global survey released this week.

Investment as a percentage of revenue rose to 3.6 percent in 2009 and 78 percent of airports expect budgets to remain the same or increase in 2011. In return for this investment, technology is being challenged to deliver even greater efficiencies and cost reductions.

The 7th annual SITA Airport IT Trends Survey, co-sponsored by Airports Council International (ACI) and Airline Business, is based on responses from 128 airport operators, representing the views of 220 airports worldwide, the highest number since the survey started in 2003.

The survey, which was launched Tuesday at the 20th ACI World Annual General Assembly in Bermuda, found that ‘reducing the cost of business’ is the top investment driver for airports (52 percent consider this their highest priority) followed by ‘improving customer service’ (48 percent). This exactly mirrors the top two priorities for airlines as found in SITA’s Airline IT Trends Survey in June 2010.

After a reduction in airport’s IT budgets during 2008, spend rose to 3.6 percent in 2009. Strongest areas of growth were in Asia Pacific and the Middle East and Africa, with more cautious levels of investment in Europe and North America. The outlook for 2011 looks positive with 78 percent of airports expecting budgets to remain the same or increase.

Top of the investment list for airports are upgrades to network infrastructure with virtualisation and VoIP featuring high on CIOs’ priorities. Both technologies are seen as key to driving down IT costs so it is not a surprise that four out of five airports are planning to invest in VoIP in the next three years with 70 percent planning to deploy some form of virtualization by 2013.

“The survey shows that investing in IT infrastructure remains a high priority for airports as they recognise that it delivers cost savings, greater efficiencies for airports and a smoother travel experience for passengers,” said Ilya Gutlin, Vice President Airport Solution Line at SITA. “With self-service for passengers, such as kiosks for check-in, becoming the norm, the survey confirms that airports are now looking to invest in new areas such as e-gates for boarding, and providing information and services via passengers’ mobile phones.”

Passenger self-service has come of age in airports with 60 percent of respondents having already implemented kiosks for check-in and 55 percent of these planning to add additional kiosks. Another 26 percent, predominantly smaller airports, are planning to introduce kiosks by 2013. But kiosks are not just used for check-in, half of respondents plan to introduce new services such as bag tag printing, flight transfers, and scanning of passports by 2013. Airports are also starting to use self boarding e-gates to automate the processing of passengers at boarding and security check points, both which will help to reduce queue times and speed up processing.

Up to 30 percent of airports surveyed are using social media channels today and over half will take advantage of these new networks to communicate with passengers and public communities. Nearly 60 percent are looking at social media to provide flight information and operational updates with 52 percent already using or planning to use them for survey and focus groups, and 48 percent for disruptions and emergency updates (as was experienced in April and May 2010 during the Icelandic ash cloud event).

One of IT’s biggest impacts is in improving operational efficiency at airports by enabling improved collaboration and decision making among the different organisations responsible for the smooth running of an airport both airside and landside. The survey shows strong interest (32 percent already and 22 percent planning to implement by 2013) in the implementation of ‘Shared Airport Operations Centres’ where various stakeholders can convene and have access to integrated data and real-time communications. Another IT solution identified by airports to improve operational efficiency is passenger flow monitoring. The data will help to improve the passenger experience, reduce wait times and enable better planning and utilisation of airport resources. Singapore visitor arrivals in September 2010 registered a growth of 18.4% to reach 947,000, the highest number of arrivals received in the month of September and the tenth consecutive month of record visitor arrivals for Singapore.

September’s visitor arrivals can be partly attributed to the hosting of the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix, the world’s only F1 night race and the draw of the many leisure and entertainment events under the Grand Prix Season Singapore 2010. Visitor days were estimated at 3.8 million days, a year-on-year growth of 17.5% in comparison with September 2009.

Indonesia (244,000), Malaysia (95,000), Australia (80,000), P.R. China (74,000) and India (55,000) were Singapore's top five visitor-generating markets in September 2010. These markets accounted for 58% of total visitor arrivals for the month.

12 out of the top 15 markets registered positive year-on-year growth in September this year. In September 2010, South Korea (+63.2%), Malaysia (+40.2%), and Vietnam (+38.9%) registered their highest growth out of the top 15 markets.

AOR posted a 5.2 percentage point increase over September 2009 to reach 82% in September 2010, while ARR increased by 13.1% over September 2009 to reach an estimate of Sin$233.

RevPAR increased by 20.7% to reach Sin$192 in September 2010 and hotel room revenue grew 22.6% against September 2009 to reach an estimated Sin$174 million in September 2010.

In September 2010, the AOR of Economy Tier hotels reported the largest growth (+13.5 percentage points) against September 2009 to reach 81%.

The ARR of Mid-Tier hotels recorded the largest growth of 25.1% against September 2009 to reach Sin$185 in September 2010.

Hotels in the Economy Tier reported the largest growth (+43.4%) in RevPAR in September 2010 to reach Sin$87.

Tiger Airways to Launch Double Daily Flights to Jakarta

Tiger Airways is to launch a second daily flight on its popular Jakarta-Singapore route, with flights beginning from 11 January 2011.

Tiger Airways announced in July that it had won additional rights to operate a second daily service to Jakarta in the distribution of limited traffic rights by Singapore’s Air Traffic Rights Committee (ATRC). This decision was appealed by a competitor airline but the original decision to award the rights to Tiger Airways has now been upheld.

Rosalynn Tay, Managing Director of Tiger Airways Singapore, said, “We are looking forward to serving twice the number of passengers on our popular Jakarta-Singapore route. With twice the number of flights, we will be even better placed to bring down fares for tourists and business travellers flying between these two important ASEAN capitals.”

Alaska Air reports 'best quarter ever'

Alaska Air Group reported profit increase of nearly 40% for the third quarter, which the company says was the best in its history.

Alaska Air Group -- the parent company of Alaska Airlines and sister carrier Horizon Air -- made USD 122 million in the quarter, up from USD 88 million during the same quarter a year ago.

The Associated Press writes "without special items, the profit would have been USD 118.1 million, or USD 3.21 per share. Revenue rose 10.3% to USD 1.07 billion, from USD 967.4 million a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were expecting a profit of USD 3.11 per share on revenue of USD 1.06 billion."

"We are pleased to report our best quarter ever, with record earnings driven by higher traffic and load factors," Alaska Air CEO Bill Ayer says in a press release. "We couldn't be more proud of our people for their commitment to operating our flights safely and delivering outstanding on-time performance and customer service."

To the latter point, Air Transport World writes "Ayer noted that Alaska Airlines continued its streak of excellent on-time performance, holding the No. 1 spot in the US Dept. of Transportation's on-time performance among the 10 largest domestic airlines for 16 of the last 17 months ended August 2010."

The Seattle Times also crunches some of the airline's numbers, writing that "yield, or the amount passengers paid for each mile they flew, actually fell slightly to 13.96 cents a mile on Alaska Airlines. But occupancy, called load factor, rose 3 percentage points to 85.3%. And per-mile costs fell, too."

But perhaps the most-telling measure of Alaska Air's successful quarter might be its operating margin, or the airline's profit as a percent of it's revenue.

Terry Maxon of The Dallas Morning News crunches those numbers in the paper's Airline Biz blog.

He writes that "in third quarter 2010, Alaska Air Group was clearly the winner on operating margin at 20.3%. In other words, Alaska pocketed USD 1 in operating profits for every USD 5 in operating revenues it brought in." Elephants suffer as UWA top brass fight

The Uganda wildlife Authority of late has been having problems with the management. As the saying goes, when two elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffers. Because of the wrangles among the top bosses of UWA has led to the death of animals for example elephants. Poachers have
taken this incidence to their advantage as they are continuing to kill animals in their sanctuaries under the Authority of Uganda wildlife.

A representative from Semiliki Wildlife Reserve in the western part of Uganda reported to Daily Monitor yesterday saying that poachers killed two elephants of which one was about 15 to 20 of age and the other aged five. The aim was to sell the tusks since there is a lot of money out
of them.

The representative refused to say his name and went a head to say that the UPDF soldiers on patrol surrounding the border DR Congo had got two suspects; this is because they were found with the elephant tusks after its death.

The spokesperson for UWA Lillian Nsubuga said that she was waiting for more information about the occurrence and that poaching was one of the activities they have been fighting to bring to an end. She further said that the patrol has been doing its work of touring through the park
and at times, poachers would be got and other times not. She cited a problem of having few workers who can’t do all the work because the parks are to big. More still that the locals who stay around the park taking as part of their culture and its something they can’t do with
out. Many conferences have been carried out to educate poachers and the locals that these animals bring income to the country and so they must be protected.

UWA is not actually running well after the allegations of financial indecency that was caused by the Executive Director Moses Mapesa and his

colleagues. The bosses of UWA increased their salaries and still promoted themselves to better positions. Other people wonder how this boss was elected and some people say that he was a close friend to Tourism Minister Gen Kahinda Otafiire

The work of the UWA conserves and protects all the national parks, wildlife sanctuaries as well as wildlife reserves. Another thing is tomake sure that poaching has to an end. Many people are saying that unless these problems are solved, the wild animals will continue to suffer.

Web in Travel, a leading travel distribution, marketing and technology conference in Asia, is using several new customer engagement tools with its delegates.

“Since we are a conference that’s a lot about discussing ‘the next big thing’ and encouraging innovation, it is important that as organizers, we too demonstrate the motivation to try out new ways of doing old business,” said Yeoh Siew Hoon, owner of the conference.

One of the new solutions it will use is a flight tracking mobile application called ArrivedOK. For the delegates who sign up for the service upon registration, ArrivedOK will track the delegates’ flight and inform loved ones and colleagues back home when they have arrived in Singapore. In addition, delegates will also receive a detailed menu of information services pertaining to the conference including conference venue details, Singapore Visitor Centre details and taxi hotlines and others.

Another way WIT delegates will be engaged at the conference would be through a proprietary solution that WIT developed with a partner, Circos Brand Karma. Called WITCast, the solution allows delegates to tweet their comments and questions to the speakers and panelists as the sessions are ongoing.

“We did a trial run of this solution last year. After the delegates got used to seeing the tweets and questions flow on the screens during the sessions, they actually liked how interactive it was. This way, we got more audience participation and the whole conference took on another dimension of interactivity,” said Yeoh. “It also allowed people who weren’t at the conference to follow proceedings.”

WIT is also active on Facebook, with a community set up early in the year in order to allow for networking to begin way before the actual conference starts. Facebook is also the platform WIT chose to run its global video contest “Why I love to travel”.

Just How Adventurous are Singaporeans

A recent survey commissioned by Guinness as part of the Guinness Adventures campaign has revealed that almost 60 percent of Singaporeans have participated in an adventurous sport – including wakeboarding, bungee jumping or mountain climbing.

Despite only 30 percent of the population considering themselves to be adventurous, over three quarters believe there is strength in numbers, with 83 percent of respondents saying they would be more inclined to embark on an adventure if they are with their buddies.

Well over a third (46 percent) are also more likely to be experimental with food when they’re with their friends.

1 in 2 Singaporeans have travelled to between 4 – 9 countries and more than half (53 percent) would choose the snowy peaks of the Himalayas as their ultimate holiday destination over a range of options including jungle trekking and a staycation.

“There is this perception that Singapore is a ‘safe’ nation. We adhere to the rules, study hard, work hard and spend the weekends at shopping malls. We decided to put that stereotype to the test and find out if Singaporeans are really as conservative as they think. That is why we decided to commission this survey – to determine how adventurous Singaporeans really are,” said Mr Paul Bisson, Marketing Manager of Guinness at Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore (APBS). “The Guinness Adventures campaign is our opportunity to reward and celebrate the spirit of adventure in Singapore. Besides determining Singapore’s adventure rating in areas of sports and travel, the survey has reaffirmed the nation’s favourite pastime – food. A majority of Singaporeans would risk their lives for a taste of the exotic, with almost half (47 percent) of respondents revealing that they were willing to eat the potentially deadly puffer fish if given the chance. However, only 1 in 5 Singaporeans would consider trying duck egg foetus, a popular Filipino delicacy.

Singaporeans also tend to be more adventurous when it comes to work, with almost 70 percent of respondents saying they would consider making a radical career change in order to pursue their passions. When it came to selecting their dream jobs, the adventurous streak was clearly evident, with a majority choosing to be travel hosts (35.5 percent), followed by helicopter pilots (17.6 percent) and archaeologists (14.3 percent).

It comes as no surprise that buildings and rooftop bars in Singapore keep getting higher, as the findings also revealed that Singaporeans are more afraid of snakes (62.4 percent) than they are of heights. The nation’s biggest fears also include ghosts (40.4 percent) and cockroaches (33 percent).

In the Guinness Adventures campaign teams of three are required to register online and obtain a series of unique codes via purchase, in order to begin their ascent and scale the virtual peak. Will new travel alert keep you from cruising in Europe

As has been widely reported here at USA TODAY and elsewhere, the Obama administration over the weekend formally warned Americans about potential terrorist attacks in Europe, urging U.S. citizens to be careful on public transportation and at tourist sites.

The State Department "travel alert" stops short of advising Americans to stay away from Europe or to take precautions in any specific country or city. Still, it comes as European countries have issued their own warnings, some focusing on a potential strike similar to the attack in November 2008 in Mumbai, India, by armed commandos who targeted a train station and popular hotels, killing 166.

A State Department official said Sunday's alert was issued after "intensive discussion" in recent weeks with allies "about the nature of the ongoing threat."

Singapore Airlines to launch Singapore - Barcelona - Sao Paulo Flights

Singapore Airlines is to add a sixth continent to its route network in March 2011 with the launch of thrice-weekly flights between Singapore and the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, via Barcelona, Spain.

Sao Paulo will be the airline’s first South American destination. A dynamic metropolis, Brazil’s largest city is an arts and entertainment centre as well as an influential player in the areas of commerce and finance within the region.

Flights will operate between Barcelona and Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport under codeshare arrangements with Star Alliance partner Spanair. The codeshare will help facilitate travel from Spanair’s network to Sao Paulo through its Barcelona hub. SIA already adds its code to Spanair domestic flights between Barcelona and Bilbao, Madrid and Palma Mallorca.

“We are very excited about this new service which will help boost ties between Singapore and Brazil and pave the way for enhanced trade, tourism and travel links between Asia and South America. It will also provide a direct link between Barcelona and Sao Paulo,” said Mr Bey Soo Khiang, Singapore Airlines’ Senior Executive Vice President Marketing & Corporate Services. “Singapore Airlines has been eyeing opportunities in the fast-growing South American market for some time. Singapore Airlines currently flies daily between Singapore and Barcelona via Milan in Italy. With the new service, three of the flights will operate non-stop between Singapore and Barcelona while four will continue to operate on a Singapore-Milan-Barcelona routing.

To ensure that both Barcelona and Milan will continue to be served seven times per week, thrice-weekly non-stop Singapore-Milan services will be introduced.

Thai Airways launches Carbon Offset Programme

Thai Airways International launched a Carbon Offset Programme with IATA to provide customers with the opportunity to viturally offset carbon emissions generated from flying.

The IATA programme calculates the carbon emissions based on a methodology developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization. The system utilizes IATA’s long-established financial system to enable airlines and their customers to purchase ticket and offset at the same time.

The IATA Carbon Offset Programme only invests in UN-approved Certified Emissions Reductions (CER) projects and voluntary credits, which comply with the recognized Gold and or Voluntary Carbon Standards. The entire customer contribution goes to the sponsored projects. As transparency is critical to ensure that money collected result in reduced emissions, in this regard, the IATA offset program has been independently approved by the UK’s carbon offset quality assurance scheme.

WTD, is held this year under the theme ‘Tourism and Biodiversity’, in support of the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity. China, one of the world’s most biologically diverse countries and a major tourism destination, will lead the 2010 official WTD celebrations.

The High Level Dialogue on Tourism, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, meeting in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, the host of the WTD celebrations, will debate issues ranging from the economic value of biodiversity for tourism, to how to integrate biodiversity protection into planning for sustainable tourism.

Participants include representatives from the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); the President and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and the CEO of Six Senses Resorts; as well as the Ministers of Tourism of China, Kenya and Malaysia.

The conclusions of the High Level Dialogue will be presented to the tenth Conference of the Parties to the CBD as part of UNWTO’s contribution to the post-2010 targets of the CBD (Nagoya, Japan, 18-29 October).

The official WTD celebrations, organized by UNWTO, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and Guangdong Province, are held in conjunction with the Guangdong International Tourism and Culture Festival and also include a road parade for WTD Celebrations and the Asian Games and a photo exhibition along the streets of Guangzhou, featuring photos from this year’s WTD photo competition.

China Airlines Expanding Cargo Routes to China

China Airlines has launched three new all-cargo routes linking Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport with Xiamen, Nanjing and Fuzhou.

The new weekly cargo route to Xiamen started on 4 September 2010, while the new weekly service to Nanjing will begin on 11 September. The twice-weekly Taoyuan - Fuzhou cargo service will be launched at the end of September. These new cargo flights are expected to mostly transport electronic goods, textiles and shoes.

CAL currently operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 747-400F freighters, and according to IATA is the 10th largest international cargo transporter in the world.

Since August of 2009, CAL has transported 56,000 tons of cargo from airports in mainland China, accounting for 10% of its total worldwide cargo loads, and CAL also recorded a cargo load factor of over 75 percent from January to July of 2010.

bmi has launched Economy and Business Class Promotion

bmi launches a promotion with substantial savings on both its economy, and business class fares.

The sale includes flights to Beirut, to which bmi will begin a second daily service from London Heathrow next March at the start of the summer 2011 season. The new service, which will be operated on an Airbus A321 aircraft, complements bmi's existing daily service.

Ngurah Rai airport to get Rp 2 trillion face-lift

State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I said it will spend Rp 2 trillion (USD 224 million) to renovate Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to improve service to domestic and international travelers.

Speaking to reporters in Kuta, Bali, on Thursday, president director Tommy Soetomo said the company would construct a new, 126,000 square meter terminal designated for international flights.

Tommy said the current terminal would be assigned specifically for domestic arrivals and departures.

Ngurah Rai currently serves 9 million passengers per year, comprised of 4.6 million domestic and 5 million international passengers.

“It is already overloaded,” Tommy said, adding that “overcapacity should be resolved by expanding its terminals, especially for international routes.”

Tommy said that the airport renovation would be internally funded and supported by bank loans.

“*Financing* is still in the final calculation, but the project may cost Rp 2 trillion,” he added.

Apart from additional passenger capacity, Ngurah Rai will be equipped with a modern baggage handling system to guarantee the safety, he said.

“It is important for us to develop an airport that can provide security and also safety for every passenger’s baggage. It’s a must,” he said.

He added that a requirement for new safety and security equipment will require more expensive investment in a new airport.

“We have to be able to provide a service level guarantee for customers for airline, cargo or passenger services,” he added.

He said Ngurah Rai airport would have 13-14 million international passengers per year after the renovation is completed in 2013.

Angkasa Pura I controls 13 airports in the central and eastern part of the archipelago, including Hasanudin Airport in Makassar, Adi Sutjipto in Yogyakarta, Sam Ratulangi in Manado, Adi Sumarmo in Surakarta, Franskaisiepo in Biak, Eltari in Kupang, Juanda in Surabaya, Sepinggan in Balikpapan, Achmad Yani in Semarang, Syamsuddin Noor in Banjarmasin, Pattimura in Ambon and Selaparang in Lombok.

According to the company’s financial report, PT Angkasa Pura I booked Rp 664.07 billion profits in 2009 up from Rp 662.33 billion in the previous year, while the company’s assets reached Rp 8.62 trillion in 2009, up from Rp 7.47 trillion in 2007.

Air traffic control for PT Angkasa Pura I and II will be consolidated into a single body by Jan. 1, 2011, as mandated by the 2009 Law on Aviation, he said.

“Flight Information Region *FIR* will not be separated into two regions - Makassar Advanced Air Traffic Services *MAATS* and Jakarta Air Traffic Services *JATS*,” he said.

“We will have a more focused handling of flight information,” Tommy added, without further elaboration. (ebf)

Singapore Visitor Arrivals in July 2010

Singapore visitor arrivals registered 24.1 percent growth to reach 1,095,000 in July 2010, the highest ever recorded visitor arrivals in the month of July. This is also the first time that visitor arrivals have exceeded 1 million in a single month.

The positive growth in visitor arrivals this month can be largely attributed to improved travel sentiment, the draw of our Integrated Resorts and the Great Singapore Sale, and tactical promotions by airlines and hotels.

Visitor days were estimated at 4.3 million days, a year-on-year growth of 21 percent in comparison with July 2009.

Indonesia (232,505), P.R. China (117,728), Australia (87,273), Malaysia (82,512) and India (64,862) were Singapore's top five visitor-generating markets in July 2010. These markets accounted for 53 percent of total visitor arrivals for the month. 12 out of the top 15 markets registered positive year-on-year growth in July this year.

In July 2010, P.R. China (+62.8 percent), Malaysia (+52.6 percent), and Hong Kong SAR (+39.9 percent) registered their highest growth out of the top 15 markets.

Gazetted hotel room revenue was estimated at SGD 173 million, representing an increase of 37.2 percent compared to a year ago.

Average Occupancy Rate posted a 10.2 percentage point increase over July 2009 to reach 90 percent in July 2010 while Average Room Rate increased by 19.9 percent to reach an estimate of SGD 209. Revenue Per Available Room increased by 35.3 percent to reach SGD 188 and hotel room revenue grew 37.2 percent to reach an estimated SGD 173 million.

In July 2010, the AOR of Economy Tier hotels reported the largest growth (+17 percentage points) against July 2009 to reach 90 percent. The ARR of Mid-Tier hotels recorded the largest growth of 0.3 percent against July 2009 to reach SGD 174 in July 2010. Hotels in the Economy Tier reported the largest growth (+0.5 percent) in RevPAR in July 2010 to reach SGD 92.

Garuda Indonesia Appoints Risnandi as Senior General Manager

Garuda Indonesia appointed Risnandi as Senior General Manager, Area Asia replacing Iswandi Said, who moved on to head up the airline’s operations in Europe.

Risnandi who will be based at the airline’s office in Singapore, assumes this leadership role after having held various management positions with the national carrier since 1989. Over the years, he worked in various departments namely, maintenance, finance and procurement before moving on to network planning in 1998. Prior to taking up his latest role, he spent five years heading the network management division as Vice President, taking charge of the airline’s network operations at the company headquarters in Jakarta.

“Asia is a key market in our ‘Quantum Leap’ strategy to increase the number of international departures by more than 300% to 1,222 a week by 2015. It is not surprising that companies would get around to exploiting the house from facebook. That goes triple for travel-related industries, whose clientele tend to be extremely active on social networks.

Portland-based Second Porch — an online vacation rental site that lists 4000 properties in more than 100 countries — existed wholly as a Facebook app until it launched its own base of operations, secondporch.com, in June. Browse its listings, and you’re able to navigate between Facebook profiles of owners and past renters, or see which properties your current Facebook friends recommend. And likewise, if you make an inquiry, owners are able to sniff around your profile.

"We view transparency as critical to overcoming one of the vacation rental industry’s issues: the fear of renting from an unknown person. So requiring a Facebook account largely overcomes that," said president Brent Hieggelke.

It is not just the start-ups, either. In mid-June, review giant TripAdvisor.com launched Trip Friends, a feature on its Web site that allows its thirty-some million monthly visitors to see which of their Facebook friends have visited a certain city, hotel, attraction, restaurant, what have you. That data is quarried from TripAdvisor’s popular Facebook app, Cities I’ve Visited, where users stick pins into places they’ve been on a world map and sound off about it.

Lest you think you can outsmart that CIV app with some obscure locale, it claims to highlight more than a billion user submissions (and counting).

Meanwhile, after being somewhat sucker punched by third party innovations in recent years, airlines won’t be late to the Facebook party. Just last Thursday, Delta launched a "ticket window", the first of its kind on any social network, allowing users to book directly through the airline’s Facebook page, as opposed to being redirected to delta.com. Just click on the "Book a Trip" tab and go — share your itinerary with your network, if you so desire.

British budget flier easyJet was supposed to be the first to offer bookings directly through Facebook, according to reports earlier in the year. Delta just beat them to the punch. Expect every airline to soon follow suit.

Finnair launches Stuttgart and Stockholm Bromma Flights

Finnair launched flights between Stockholm and Helsinki as well as flights to Stuttgart.

Finnair customers now have the option of choosing Bromma, situated very close to the centre of the Swedish capital and close to the Kista district, in addition to Stockholm's main Arlanda airport.

Finnair has also just launched flights to Stuttgart, the capital of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

The airline flies to Bromma twice a day on weekdays and once on Sundays. The airport benefits from its proximity to many international companies.

"The new super-fast connection serves our business customers better, especially those who travel frequently between Helsinki and Stockholm. Bromma airport is extremely efficient. It's even possible to check in as little as 15 minutes before departure, which significantly cuts the total travel time," said Petteri Kostermaa, responsible for route planning at Finnair.

In addition to the Finnair flights, cooperation will start with daily flights operated by Danish partner airline Sun-Air. Cooperation between Finnair and Sun-Air also offers Swedish customers fast connections with Finnair's flights to the Far East. Finnair also continues to offer a choice of more than 50 flights a week between Helsinki and Arlanda.

Finnair's flights to Stuttgart opened on Monday. Morning departures are from Helsinki on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, as well as daily evening departures. Morning return flights to Helsinki depart from Stuttgart every day, with evening departures on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Finnair customers will also have access to new lounge facilities at Stuttgart airport. Finnair Business Class passengers, Finnair Plus Platinum, Gold and Silver cardholders, and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members can use the versatile British Airways Executive Club lounge in Stuttgart's Terminal 1. The lounge is located on the 3rd floor opposite Gate 173 on the 'air side'.

Emirates to Increase Flights to Houston and Los Angeles

Emirates will launch second daily flights to Los Angeles and Houston. Start at 31 October 2010 for Los Angeles and 1 November 2010 for Houston, Emirates will fly non-stop to both cities twice a day on Boeing 777 aircraft.

The airline, that recorded a significant increase in revenue for the Americas in 2009-10, will soon offer over 15,000 seats on 98 return flights per week to the United States.

Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline said, “The additional services will provide customers in the Middle East and Asia with even easier access to the largest cities in Texas and California, supporting the burgeoning business and leisure traffic between these markets and the United States.”

Emirates’ services play a significant role in supporting trade and tourism between the United Arab Emirates and America. Since the airline launched its first flight to New York in 2004, the value of trade between the two nations has almost tripled, reaching US$12.7 billion in the 12 months to June 2010.

The additional flights will provide further impetus to the U.A.E.'s strengthening trade relationship with the States, that saw US exports reach US$11.4billion this year - making the U.A.E. the largest consumer of American exports in the Middle East and North Africa.

Key imports from the United States include machinery, computer and electronic products, primary metal manufacturing, chemicals and transport equipment.

Over 750 US firms have set up offices in Dubai and 400,000 American business and leisure travellers visited the Emirate last year, a 23% increase from 2007-08.

Emirates currently flies nonstop to four U.S. cities: New York, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The airline will reinstate its flagship A380 aircraft on one of its double-daily JFK services from 31 October 2010.
